Arthur Buck – World Café Live – Philadelphia, PA – September 18, 2018
The recent Arthur Buck show at World Café Live was exciting on many levels. The Philadelphia live premiere of REM veteran Peter Buck’s newest band, with the wonderful artistry of Joseph Arthur. Buck’s Minus 5 co-hort Scott McCaughey back on the road after a stroke sidelined him last year. And the small stage on which all of these factors, along with the drumming awesomeness of Linda Pitmon and the keys of Gregg Foreman, converged make it an extra special night of music. Arthur Buck did not disappoint.
Opening with the anthemic “I Am the Moment” and featuring some great vocal moments from Arthur, most notably the haunting “Can’t Make It Without You,” the 16-song set was stunning.
Buck brandished the e-bow on numerous songs and the voices of McCaughey, Pitmon and Foreman added backing vocal richness. McCaughey’s trademark smile was certainly welcome, with a highlight coming early when Arthur and McCaughey sang together.
The band already has worked on new songs for a possible second album, even ending the night with the charming “Love at First Sight.” Arthur’s own “In the Sun” was another highlight, as was the Lou Reed cover “Coney Island Baby.” May they return to Philly soon with this soaring rock.
