Even Mother Nature couldn’t keep classic rock out of Philadelphia last night. So as excited fans trudged through snow and sleet to get to Philly’s newest concert venue, the Fillmore, no one seemed to mind the weather conditions because they knew when they arrived, it was going to be hot. Just after 8 o’clock, when 80’s rocker and ballad guru Bryan Adams and his band stepped on to the stage for his Get Up Tour, they did not disappoint.
The Fillmore played a perfect backdrop for the brisk and chilly evening. “I thought I had played every venue in Philly,” Adams joked with the crowd. But truthfully, he wasn’t kidding. Adams’ impressive career has spanned several decades which has brought him back to the City of Brotherly Love, time and time again.
Despite the allure of Adams’ distinctive voice with just a guitar in the last few Philly stops of his Bare Bones Tour, it was great to see him backed by his band again this time. Like old friends jamming together, there was an exciting energy that resonated from the stage. Most long-time fans recognized the faces sharing the stage with Adams’ last night as his über talented, long time bandmates – guitarist Keith Scott, drummer Mikey Curry, Gary Breit on piano and bassist Norm Fisher.

Not many artists can boast a catalogue of work that has traversed nearly 40 years and 13 studio albums. Last night, from the opening song to the final ovation, Adams shared a perfect mix of his new music with his timeless classics. Opening with “Do What You Gotta Do” from his latest album Get Up, Adams’ segued flawlessly into his classic hit “Can’t Stop This Thing We Started” and “She’s Only Happy When She’s Dancing,” to the approval of his screaming fans.
The powerful volley between old and new continued for two fantastic hours. Seamlessly, Adams’ shared his rock in roll anthems like “Cut Like A Knife,” “Summer of 69,” and “Kids Wanna Rock,” along with his timeless ballads “Heaven,” “(Everything I Do) I Do It For You” and “Have You Ever Loved A Woman?” as well as new music including “You Belong To Me” and “Brand New Day.”
Throughout the night, concert goers became part of the show as they sang loudly along with every word, swaying and dancing on the standing-room-only floor, below the crystal chandeliers of the Fillmore. Their participation did not go un-noticed with Adams showing his approval by telling his audience, “that was excellent.”

One of the evening’s highlights for me was Adams’ adding one of my old fave songs back into his set list. It had been years since I had seen him perform “I’ll Always Be Right There” from his 18 Til I Die album, live in concert. Another super cool, modern addition to this tour was the massive video screen that backed the stage showing old concert footage, music videos, audience members and designs and shapes.
I’ve been covering Adams’ for decades, and his distinctive voice and vocal ability remains remarkably strong. Experiencing one of his concerts almost feels somewhat like a time warp. Your immediately thrown back into the 80’s or 90’s because when you listen to this experienced artist, his voice is unchanged. If the Get Up Tour stops in your area, go check it out. Bryan Adams and his band continue to rock like the best of them and still put on one hell of a show!
