Charlie Puth – Theater of the Living Arts – Philadelphia, PA – April 4, 2016
After rocking Detroit, Washington D.C., and many other cities across the country, Charlie Puth finally brought his ‘Nine Track Mind’ tour to Philadelphia. He brought the Theater of the Living Arts to life on Monday Night when he performed to a sold-out crowd of eager fans. He is currently on tour to promote his brand new album, Nine Track Mind, which is now available everywhere.
Before Charlie made the stage his own, opener Sophie Beem warmed up the crowd. Sophie, a 16-year-old New York based singer who is signed to Beyoncé’s record label, Parkwood Entertainment, brought incredible energy with her performance. These days, it’s a rarity to find a pop star that can both sing and dance – and do it well. Thankfully, Sophie is one of these rarities and did not disappoint. She performed several songs off her new self-titled EP, such as ‘I Got It’ featuring the one and only Fetty Wap. Her performance made it easy to see why a superstar, such as Beyoncé, would love her.
Shortly after, the second opener Phoebe Ryan took the stage. Phoebe, a 25-year-old pop singer who hails from the same town as Puth (Rumson, NJ), instantly brightened up the room with her bubbly personality. The electric-green haired singer put on an eclectic performance that mashed together elements of pop, hip-hop, and rock music. Her set list included her new single ‘Chronic,’ her jaw-dropping remix of ‘Ignition’ by R Kelly, and Taylor Swift’s personal favorite, ‘Mine.’ Phoebe is definitely a promising new artist to keep an eye on.

As the lights dimmed down once more, a silhouette of Charlie Puth could be seen as he walked over to his piano. This made the crowd grow even tighter as they prepared to see the person they were waiting for since the beginning of the night. Puth opened his set with a larger-than-life production that included everything from gigantic light displays to fog to his own three-piece band. Of course, the opening number included Charlie himself, as well as some of the freestyle piano playing and beat boxing his fans know him for.
From this, Puth transitioned into one of his biggest songs to date, ‘Marvin Gaye.’ Charlie only had to play the first few keys of this song before the crowd instantly perked up and began singing along. After a handful of more upbeat songs, such as ‘Dangerously’ and ‘My Gospel,’ Puth decided to take it down a notch. He got off of his piano bench, sat on top of his piano, and sang stripped versions of his songs ‘Up All Night’ and ‘Then There’s You.’ The stripped versions of these songs really gave Puth a chance to show just how talented he really is. I was genuinely impressed at the strength of his vocals and his ability to entertain a large crowd without any fancy production.

Following this, Puth kept it intimate by taking a minute to talk with his fans in the crowd. It’s clear that he and his fans have an interesting dynamic that only they truly understand. After performing a few more songs, he finished the night by playing his two biggest hits, ‘One Call Away’ and ‘See You Again,’ which the crowd went wild for. Puth’s show allowed me to see what all the hype around him is about. Before, I didn’t quite understand why everyone seems to love him so much. Now, after seeing him live, I know that Charlie is a phenomenal performer. He has definitely solidified his place in the pop world. I can’t wait to see what he does next!
