This movie takes that old war-horse – the catburglar film – and makes it palatable for the 90’s.
Sean Connery is impossibly smooth as aging thief Mac, seeming like a long-lost relative of his James Bond character who came down on the wrong side of the law.
Catherine Zeta-Jones is also surprisingly likable in the role of his young protegee Gin, bringing much more to the role than just her incredible looks.
Sadly, this film has been through one too many Hollywood story meetings. The crosses and double-crosses tend to blur into an impenetrable post-Mission Impossible haze.
And, of course, being a Hollywood film, they felt the need to have romantic tension between the two leads. Connery at least has the good sense to seem a little uncomfortable when Zeta-Jones lets loose her abundant charms on him. After all, he is easily old enough to be her grandfather.
In the end, Entrapment turns out to be an enjoyable but slightly trite adventure film.
