The lo-fi indie air of Frankie Cosmos held court to a gaggle of Philadelphians at First Unitarian Church on November 1. The tight, dark and warm room opened its ears and heart to the flood of tunes from the Greta Kline-led project. (Greta is the daughter of actors Kevin Kline and Phoebe Cates.)  The youthful crowd sang along to most songs, which were drawn from the 2016 “Next Thing” and before. The songs were quick and the four bandmates soaked in and reciprocated all the love.

Big Thief and Free Cake for Every Creature opened. Big Thief put on a mind-blowing set led by the intricate guitar and vocals of Adrianne Lenker. Gut-wrenching lyrics poured forth and Lenker, both quiet and loud at the same time, stole everyone’s hearts, only to return them with newly refurbished innards. Short and profound time-wise, Big Thief’s set will resonate for weeks to come.

Free Cake for Every Creature were a fine and fun beginning to the night. A spiraling display of pop and rock, as the first course for the show, they were both savory and sweet.
