I Still Know What You Did Last Summer

I STILL KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER (1998)

Starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr., Brandy Norwood, Mekhi Phifer, Muse Watson, Bill Cobbs. Matthew Settle, Jeffrey Combes, Jennifer Esposito and Jack Black.

Screenplay by Trey Callaway.

Directed by Danny Cannon.

Distributed by Columbia Pictures. 100 minutes.  Rated R.

The supposed Scream renaissance of the hip slasher flick lasted, well, honestly, only about halfway through the first Scream. Though I Still Know does have a deft way with topical references, this film would have been third billed on a drive-in screen twenty years ago.

All of the hoary old clichés rear their ugly heads here. It’s an hour and a half of beautiful, stupid teenagers pairing off and then getting sliced and diced by a mysterious, dull stranger. In fact, the characters’ dumbness even becomes a major plot point when five college students get into danger because not even one of them realizes that Brasilia is the capitol of Brazil, not Rio De Janeiro.

The only reason this film is at all worth seeing is to keep track of all the ways the writers are able to come up with to get Jennifer Love Hewitt into a towel or wet t-shirt. Now, that’s entertainment!
