Kurt Vile, Waxahatchee & Luke Roberts – The Union Transfer – Philadelphia, PA – October 9, 2015
With a mountain of pedals at his disposal, Kurt Vile, hometown hero (or hoagie if you were to catch the odd humor of one of his t-shirts for sale), entranced a sold-out Union Transfer with his sublime guitar work last Friday.
With purples, reds and blues illuminating Vile and his band The Violators, they twisted and turned through works past and from the 2015 LP b’lieve i’m goin down… With long locks covering his visage, Vile’s mystery is matched with oddity with such songs as the set opener “Dust Bunnies.”

The show opened with the Nashville native Luke Roberts and his methodical Neil Young-esque songcraft. Calm and ruminative, he was also joined by Vile on one song.

Philadelphia’s own Waxahatchee was second up and rocked the most of all three acts. With Katie Crutchfield at the helm and this year’s Ivy Tripp as the catalyst the group blasted through a crowd still filling in the venue. In addition to the rest of her band, her sister Allison helped to make up a sonic counterpoint that was aurally and visually exciting. As a trio bill, it was certainly a rocking way to begin a fall weekend.
