Let’s Be Cops is a new movie with a classic story, reminiscent of an eighties buddy cop movie.
It stars Jake Johnson (of New Girl and Safety Not Guaranteed) and Damon Wayans Jr. (of Happy Endings and New Girl). These two actors have worked together before on the set of New Girl and have incredible chemistry together on screen. They flow easily, playing off each other’s energy effortlessly, creating an entertaining movie with a believable relationship.
In a comedy that puts friendship at its forefront, this relationship is imperative for success.
Another relationship that shines is the one that both main characters have with Nina Dobrev’s chracter, Josie. Dobrev, who currently stars on CW drama The Vampire Diaries, is surprisingly successful in the comedic role. She portrays a waitress and struggling makeup artist who is the love interest for Wayans’ character, Justin. Dobrev is not only gorgeous, but versatile in her acting ability. I would not be surprised if this role launches her big screen career.
Another surprising standout was Rob Riggle as a serious cop. Whereas he usually provides comic relief, in this movie he is more serious and action driven, yet still believable. This may be partially due to his background as a Marine Corps officer.
Each member of the cast added something to the movie, whether it is trouble, comedy, or danger, and therefore, it strikes a great balance.
Let’s Be Cops utilizes music to set the mood of the movie. The music was uptempo and reflects the fast pace of the action movie.
Another thing that is well done is the plot. There are twists and turns that keep the story interesting and unpredictable. In addition, as opposed to other recent buddy cop movies, this one is more appropriate and definitely appeals to a broader audience.
Let’s Be Cops is a lighthearted comedy about two best friends who learn to grow up and act responsibly, even if the means to getting there aren’t necessarily legal.
