Marrow & Cactus Karma – MilkBoy – Philadelphia, PA – November 9, 2015
Last Monday only a handful of people were on hand to hear one of the more unique rock voices to emerge in 2015. Marrow, a Chicago-based four-piece, played selections from their debut The Gold Standard. Led by the multi-pedal-wielding Liam Cunningham, they immersed MilkBoy in sounds akin to Wilco, Grateful Dead and an Americana rock of the future.

Cunningham’s voice was wonderfully matched with Macie Stewart’s, especially on the album’s title track. Stewart’s keys blended wonderfully with the bass lines of Lane Beckstrom and drummer Matt Carroll. Take time to discover this band as their skeletal structure grows into a full-framed rock organism before your ears.

Princeton-based Cactus Karma opened. A tight jazzy sextet (though only five strong on this particular evening), they played off of the energy of each other to get the small crowd dancing. Led by Pam Soffer’s wonderful vocals, they were a joy to behold.
