Mothers – Milkboy -Philadelphia, PA – February 4, 2016

Coming out of the brilliant scene of Athens, Georgia is Mothers, a four-piece that specializes in angular, understated mini-jams. Playing first on the bill of the Communion line-up at MilkBoy last Thursday, their buzz certainly brought out a solid contingent.

Led by the vocal and writing backbone of the band, Kristine Leschper, Mothers played their spacious alt-rock from the forthcoming When You Walk a Long Distance You Are Tired. Leschper’s voice rises in contrast to her reliably catchy guitar hooks and the driving guitar of Drew Kirby and basslines of Patrick Morales. Drummer Matthew Anderegg propels the mix further into consciousness.

The movement of the crowd is inevitable with their fascinating beat.  The front of the room seemed as engaged as the audience I first witnessed Mothers in — last June at Athens’ own Athfest — had looked from the back. They have been getting a lot of traction for “No Crying in Baseball,” but it seems obvious that the rest of the record is sure to catch on as well. You will be hearing a lot about this band and all of the accolades will certainly be true.
