Music by Candlelight

Music by Candlelight

By Jordan Wagner

There’s nothing better than enjoying live music.  But experiencing it by candlelight sounded like a cool, multi-sensory twist, so I was excited to check out the Candlelight Concerts by Fever. Playing around the world, in more than 100 cities, including here in Philadelphia, these Candlelight Concerts pair talented classical musicians, performing by candlelight with some amazing, interesting venues like aquariums, Temples, theatres, cemeteries and museums.

Originally created as a classical music series featuring the works of some of the greatest composers of all times including Vivaldi, Mozart, and Chopin, Fever has expanded their offerings to a wider variety of themes and genres. Tributes to contemporary artists like Queen, ABBA, Nirvana, Coldplay, Taylor Swift, Adele, Paramore, and Ed Sheeran, as well as movie soundtracks, anime, R&B, Hip Hop, jazz, soul and more, continues to bring in a wider audience of over three million guests to experience this classical twist on a contemporary concert.

I chose the Halloween Candlelight Experience which took place in the second oldest cemetery in the US, Philadelphia’s Laurel Hill Cemetery. Walking down candlelit pathways, guests found themselves in a beautiful section of the cemetery, surrounded by candles and statues, with the quartet in the center. Halloween classics were performed by a talented group of musicians in the glow of candlelight. Spooky songs included tracks from Ghostbusters, The Addams Family, and The Nightmare Before Christmas. The performers encouraged participation, asking attendees to sing along during the fun evening. I was thrilled to experience live music in such a cool space with talented performers. Lasting about 65 minutes, this was an exciting way to see live music with a twist.

I’ll be checking out more Candlelight Concerts in the near future. I think the next I’ll try is “Under the Sea” music at Adventure Aquarium, and the music of Joe Hisaishi, featuring his incredible music of Studio Ghibli films. Other cities, large and small, offering these exciting events range from NYC, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, Denver, Dallas, New Orleans, Paris, London, Helsinki, Des Moines, Fargo, Fayetteville, Fort Worth, Honolulu and many more! Check it out!
