Phil Collins – Barclays Center – Brooklyn, NY – October 14, 2018
After a fairly long layoff, Phil Collins proved you can’t hurry retirement. After re-emerging a couple of years ago during the opening night of the US Open in Queens NY and releasing a series of his classic albums complete with side-by-side before and after photos, Mr. Collins decided to take a leap of faith and hit the road, perhaps for one last time.
On damp night in Brooklyn, Mr. Collins came out as expected, walking with a cane. Some of us who already knew he would enter what may very well be his last tour this way seemed a bit saddened, yet excited by his appearance.
From the opening song “Against All Odds,” the crowd rose and was amped and ready, singing along to every word. Mr Collins sprinkled in a few of his more familiar Genesis tunes such as “Throwing it All Away” and “Invisible Touch.”
His voice was crisp as he sat and sang his heart out for the sold-out crowd. He did manage to rise for just one song and that was “In the Air Tonight.” The tune so many of us are familiar with and has been in just about every jukebox in the country.
Collins’ band was tight as he introduced all of the members, some who played with him in his early solo days as well as with Genesis. He saved the intro of his 17-year-old drummer son Nicholas Collins for last.
Collins played a tight 20-song set and ended with a song I’m sure many people would expect, “Take Me Home.” He ends the US tour in LA on Oct 28 but then picks it back up again in January in Australia and New Zealand. Still going strong at 67 and to quote his tour title… He’s not Dead Yet!
