Sleater-Kinney & Torres – Kings Theatre – Brooklyn, NY – December 12, 2015
If I were to choose a band of the year, it certainly would be Sleater-Kinney. Their return to rock after an eight year hiatus produced the massive achievement of No Cities to Love and a jaw-dropping live show. Their stop at Union Transfer in Philadelphia in February produced a concert that shook me to my core. So when they were to return for a five night tour of New York City and Brooklyn in December, I jumped at the chance to see them.

Last Saturday they headlined the grandiose King’s Theatre in Brooklyn. A 3,000 seat beauty from the movie palace days of old, it allowed for the sonic inventions of Carrie Brownstein, Corin Tucker and Janet Weiss to bounce off paneling that never could have dreamt of music this bold and explosive.

Brownstein could not stop leaping and Tucker’s smiles were infectious. Weiss pummeled the ears with her drums while Sleater-Kinney’s own lights, which were certainly part of the best lighting set-up in some years, pulsated colors and shifting angles. It is not hard to declare them to be the best rock band on Earth right now.

Torres opened and brought her P.J. Harvey-esque voice and emotional crackle to a growing crowd. Playing from her 2015 standout Sprinter she and her band were self-assured and rock bombast at its best.
