Speedy Ortiz, Two Inch Astronaut & Old Maybe – PhilaMOCA – Philadelphia, PA – July 18, 2018
Speedy Ortiz are masters at turning out earworm rhythms etched out by crunchy guitars. Last Wednesday the Sadie Dupuis-led quartet set PhilaMOCA on fire. They blasted out works from their 2018 LP Twerp Verse as well as fan-selected cuts from the past.
Opening with the first three tracks from Twerp was a great way to contextualize the awesome “Buck Me Off” with older works like “Raising the Skate” and “Taylor Swift.” Dupuis roared with her guitar while delivering sublime lyrics. Guitarist Andy Molholt, drummer Mike Falcone and bassist Audrey Zee Whitesides wrapped the sound of Twerp Verse with awesome alt rock textures.
Old Maybe opened the night with striking lyrics. Two Inch Astronaut filled the middle slot with propulsive rock. Catchy and fun to watch, the band offered new music despite playing one of their last shows before their indefinite hiatus.
