I'm not much of a believer in superlatives, so you'll have to believe me that when I say this film is my favorite romantic comedy ever, these are not just idle words. Finally re-released on video after about ten years off the market, The Sure Thing is still as fresh and funny today as it was when it played the theaters in 1985.
Starring a very young John Cusack (in his first starring role) as Walter "Gib" Gibson, a lovelorn college freshman who can talk a good game but can't seem to find romance. Gib is a free spirit, so when he decides to pursue Alison Bradbury, a button-down yuppie girl (Daphne Zuniga) in his class, it is an immediate disaster. Gib's best friend (Anthony Edwards, later of ER) sets up a date for Gib with a "sure thing" (Nicolette Sheridan), a beautiful and sexually experimental woman Gib has never met. The only problem is, he has to get across the country during Christmas vacation.
He gets a ride with an annoying show-tune singing couple (Tim Robbins is the guy!), and of course, Alison is there, too, crossing country to see her fiancé. As they fight across country, Gib and Alison slowly, realistically, begin to hate each other less, then kind of respect each other, and then like each other. Gib tones down the party guy aspect of his personality and Alison opens up a little. You really get a rooting interest in whether they will get together. Do anything you can to track down this video before it disappears again. It's that good.
