What You Need to Know: Boxing at Mohegan Sun on April 15

Uncasville, CT: This Saturday, Mohegan Sun and Main Events host the next installment in the Rising Stars Boxing Series featuring the top boxing prospects from New England and around the globe. The veteran Main Events team has put together yet another exciting card with some key opportunities for ten fighters on the verge of stardom. The matchmaking for this event will undoubtedly create some explosive boxing, so come expecting a show. The televised card, presented by Corona Extra, will be produced and distributed by HBO Latino beginning at 11 p.m. ET (live ET/tape-delayed PT).

Main Event (HBO Latino)

Sullivan Barrera vs. Paul Parker, 10 rounds, light heavyweights

The Fighters: Sullivan Barrera (18-1, 13 KOs) is coming off a big win versus the now former #1 Ukranian, Vyacheslav Shabranskyy. Barrera has a good jab that he consistently follows with punishing combinations. A classic counter-puncher, Barrera strikes with power when the opponent makes a mistake.

Paul “Pay-Per-View” Parker (8-1, 4 KOs) has good style as a tall fighter, using his height and reach advantage effectively. Parker has some success against more experienced fighters and utilizes a big right hand.

Keys to the Match: Barrera reads fighters quickly and if he can get inside early, he may be able to do some immediate damage. Otherwise look for the big left hook in middle rounds and a strong finish if the fight goes the distance. For Parker, he needs to stick to the jab and land that right hand. Barrera’s trainer is confident in his fighter’s conditioning.

Co-Main Event (HBO Latino)

Vaughn Alexander vs. Andres Calixto Rey, 10 rounds, middleweights

The Fighters: A very interesting prospect, Vaughn Alexander (7-0, 5 KOs) is fighting for the third time following a 12-year prison hiatus and he is putting together the makings of a great comeback story. This match was originally slated on the un-televised undercard, but with a late cancelation, Alexander now has a huge opportunity to showcase his explosive power and speed in front of a national audience on HBO Latino. Andres “Le Perla Negra” Calixto Rey (14-3, 9 KOs) is coming off three straight victories. He is a patient fighter with sneaky speed and good agility.

Keys to the Match: Vaughn Alexander is a flat out dangerous fighter who can knock out Calixto Rey once the gap is closed. This is going to be an interesting fight strategically – will Vaughn go for it in Round 1 or work on Calixto Rey at a steady pace. Calixto Rey will have to look for a mistake – and not miss – if he is going to take this one.

Junior Middleweight Madiyar Ashkeyev (7-0, 3 Kos) has solid fundamentals and power. He is managed by Egis Klimas, who also manages current and former titleholders in Sergey Kovalev, Oleksandr Usyk and Vasyl Lomachenko.
