Wye Oak & Palm – Union Transfer – Philadelphia, PA – May 14, 2018
Last Monday, Baltimore-based Wye Oak delivered a stunning set of indie rock at Union Transfer. The duo of Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack unleashed tracks from their latest record, the sublime The Louder I Call, The Faster It Runs as well as some older tracks.
Opening with a track from the new record, “The Instrument,” Wasner’s guitar and vocals wove into Stack’s percussion to create an expression of one of the great sounds of modern music. Joined on the tour for the first time by a third member, bassist Will Hackney, the tapestries of sound cascaded over the rapt audience with an exacting fury. What a great start to the week it was!
Philadelphia-based Palm opened a satisfying experimental rock crunch. Playing behind their second record Rock Island, Palm’s guitars suggest tropical climates and lyrics were obscured by long rocking jams. It was a satisfying botanical beginning to the night.
